Northern Ireland announces record number of new Covid cases as figures soar to 934 in just 24 hours

Northern Ireland has announced a record number of Covid-19 cases as new infections soared to a staggering 934.

The Department of Health also announced one further death within the six counties in the last 24 hours, bringing the total since the pandemic started to 582.

The total number of cases now stands at 12,886 - 2,623 of which were in the last seven days.

It comes after the Republic announced 442 new cases on Thursday, with 170 in Dublin.

The latest figures also make worrying reading for Cork, Donegal, Meath, Galway and Monaghan, all of which had at least 20 cases diagnosed.

Including the figures announced in Northern Ireland today, the total number of infections on the island now stands at a staggering 49,483.

The combined number of deaths has now hit 2,388 after four more people tragically passed away.

Of the cases notified in the Republic on Thursday, 225 were men and 217 were women, while 67% were under the age of 45.

A total of 69 cases were identified as community transmission, while 54% were associated with outbreaks or are close contacts of a confirmed case.
