Northern Ireland Air Ambulance to resume operational flights with immediate effect

Northern Ireland's Air Ambulance has resumed operational flights after specialist medical staff were diverted to deal with the Coronavirus  pandemic.

The service, which costs £2million each year to sustain, was stood at the start of April so clinical staff could undertake "specific training" due to Covid-19.

The Northern Ireland Air Ambulance said that now that the training had been completed, the HEMS service is once again responding to emergency calls across the country.

The vital service, which are based out of Lisburn and Enniskillen, has one operational helicopter, one back up helicopter, as well as a rapid response vehicle.

A spokesperson said: "We are very grateful for the support of the Air Ambulance Northern Ireland Charity who have expressed their willingness to assist with the pandemic response in whatever way they can.

"The HEMS service is again responding to serious trauma related to road traffic collisions, farming and industrial accidents as well as providing further support to ambulance crews attending other critical medical emergencies."

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service also said they encourage anybody who has a "genuine medical emergency" not to hesitate in calling 999 for assistance.

Health Minister Robin Swann added: “I very much welcome the fact that the air ambulance is once again responding to emergency calls. My thanks go to the charity and its staff for the vital contribution they have made and are continuing to make.”
