Northcoders launches payment scheme to combat tech gender imbalance

A coding bootcamp in the north west has launched a deferred payment scheme to help combat gender imbalance in tech.

Northcoders, which holds coding courses in Manchester and Leeds, will allow women and gender minorities – people who identify as non-binary, transgender or intersex – to not pay tuition fees up front through its ‘Study Now, Pay Later’ initiative.

Northcoders CEO Chris Hill said: “After months of hard work behind the scenes I feel incredibly proud to be able to announce the launch of this scheme.

“We know it’s going to make a significant difference to gender diversity in tech across the region.”

Successful applicants will start to repay their fees once they start earning a regular wage.

An up-front £300 deposit is required to show commitment to their place on the course, and payments will be 10 per cent the participant’s gross income each month until the balance is paid in full with no interest being charged.

Twenty places will be available on Northcoders’ September, October and November cohorts.

Mr Hill added: “Everyone at Northcoders is passionate about addressing diversity in tech, and we’re looking forward to helping more women and people who belong to gender minorities enter the tech industry.”

The scheme is the latest initiative from Northcorders to help address the gender imbalance in tech.

Northcoders partnered with global technology consultancy ThoughtWorks in May to offer four fully-funded scholarships for women and gender minorities.
