Roadworks are about to begin on Northbourne Avenue and will run until at least July.
The works to improve the road condition and minimise need for regular maintenance will begin on Monday between Greenway Street and Macarthur Avenue.
Most work will be conducted between 5am and 3pm weekdays as well as Saturdays 7am to 4pm.
It is expected to be completed by July.
The road northbound will be reduced to one lane between 5am and 3pm. Two lanes will be open outside of those hours.
The roadworks include removing existing road pavement, repairs to kerbing and stormwater drains, placement of new road pavement and line marking.
Greenway Street will be closed in both directions between Northbourne Avenue and Forbes Street for the entire two months of construction.
In a statement the government said the on-road bike lane would be closed for the entire project to be upgraded.
"During this time, cyclists will have the option of remaining on the road, noting there will be no designated cycle lane, or making use of the off-road footpath. Signage will be in place."
From June, resurfacing work will begin between Antill Street and Wakefield Avenue southbound.
The section will be closed for four nights between 7pm and 5am for the work to be completed.
The speed limit will be reduced to 40km/h during the construction and motorists are advised to take a different route if possible.
Signage will be in place to alert people to the road works. Light rail services are not affected.
Bus routes may be temporarily disrupted.
Traffic controllers will be in place at the pedestrian crossings.
