A man was killed and another injured in a midday shootout and crash Wednesday on the Bishop Ford Expressway.

A 4-year-old was inside a car that crashed near the Steel Bridge, but she was uninjured, Illinois State Police said.

The 48-year-old driver died of a gunshot wound to his arm, the Cook County medical examiner’s office said Thursday. His name hasn’t been released.

The shootout unfolded about 10:15 a.m. as people in two cars began shooting at each other in the northbound lanes Interstate 94 near the Little Calumet River, state police said in a statement.

One of the vehicles rolled over, leaving 48-year-old driver badly injured, state police said. He died minutes later at the University of Chicago Medical Center.

A 4-year-old girl and 23-year-old woman in his vehicle were uninjured, state police said. The driver of the other vehicle, a 34-year-old man, was hospitalized and expected to survive.

Northbound traffic was shut down for over four hours. The incident remains under investigation.
