Northampton players say team mates were racially abused in Nottingham

Two football league players have alleged that members of their team suffered racial abuse in Nottingham on Saturday ahead of a match at Meadow Lane.

Players from Northampton Town went for a pre-match walk around the city before drawing 2-2 at Notts County.

The alleged incident took place outside the Nottingham branch of Village Hotels on Brailsford Way, with Northampton player Timi Elsnik tweeting that a man began 'racially abusing some of our lads':

Elsnik's claim was later echoed by fellow player David Buchanan, who tweeted that the players handled the incident 'impeccably':

Timi Elsnik is currently at Northampton on loan from Derby, who also dealt with racial abuse on Saturday after one of their players, Duane Holmes, was allegedly abused by a Brentford season-ticket holder.

The Brentford fan was later arrested and a statement from the club said: "The club utterly condemns discrimination of any kind. It is abhorrent and has no place in society and we are determined to drive it out of Griffin Park.

"The most severe sanctions will be imposed on any individual convicted of discrimination and we will await the result of the police investigation before commenting further."

Nottinghamshire Police have said they are investigating the incident.

A spokesman said: "The force has had a report from Northampton Town Football Club regarding an incident at Brailsford Way in Chilwell at around 11am on Saturday April 6, 2019.

"Officers are working closely with the club as part of the investigation."

In a statement, the EFL said they were 'angered' by the news and that they would continue to work alongside the FA and the Premier League to ensure that football provides a 'welcoming environment'.

Village Hotels said they did not wish to comment on the matter.
