A North Yorkshire school has U-turned on a threat to ban Christmas after receiving “more than 500 letters and emails” from parents in protest.

Lady Lumley’s School, in Pickering, had previously told pupils no festive activities would take place this year.

RE teacher for the school, Chris Paul, said an “avalanche of commercialisation” had changed the meaning of the holiday, the BBC reported.

The teacher had asked pupils to think about what the true meaning of Christmas was instead.

Hundreds of parents “made a strong case” to have this revoked, however, and bring back gifts and festivities.

The school reported it had received over 500 letters making the case.

Head teacher Richard Bramley told the BBC: "Those students who really thought about the situation and challenged the decision appropriately created the change and brought back Christmas.

"I hope they and everyone else has a good Christmas."

Mrs Paul had previously told pupils that there would be “no cards, no parties, no gifts, no Christmas tree” at the school.
