North West worst hit as UK records a further 115 coronavirus deaths

The number of people who have died after testing positive for coronavirus across the UK has risen by a further 115.

This number includes 108 hospital patients in England, one person in Scotland, one in Northern Ireland and five hospital and care home patients in Wales.

The number is likely to rise later on when the Department of Health releases its full figures, which will include English care home and community deaths.

The highest number of deaths recorded by NHS England today came in the North West, with 30 fatalities registered here.

This contrasts with the South West where there were zero Covid-19 deaths recorded.

London - once the epicentre of the UK outbreak - recorded just nine deaths in the latest update.

The numbers so far take the official total to 38, 604 - but this number will rise when the full figures come out.

We are often warned that there may be a lag in reporting deaths over the weekend, so this could be a lower number today because of this.

The new figures come as the lockdown that has existed in the UK continues to be eased.

From today, the government has ordered schools to reopen to many more pupils.

However, many parents have kept their children home for fears of transmission - while many local authorities like Liverpool and others in Merseyside have said they will not support schools reopening at this stage.
