North West Tonight presenter supported after receiving homophobic letter

Fans of a North West Tonight presenter have rallied behind him after he received a homophobic letter.

BBC weather presenter Owain Wyn Evans has been inundated with messages of love and support on his social media after he found himself on the receiving end of vile homophobic abuse.

The 38-year-old Welsh broadcaster shared a photo of a handwritten note sent to him on Instagram, where his bio reads: “unapologetically flamboyant.” The note included homophobic slurs and the person who wrote it claimed Owain puts them “off their meal”.

Owain also posted the note and caption to Twitter and highlighted that while “the vast majority” of the mail he receives is “so, so, lovely,” he found it “bizarre that anyone would take time to scrawl stuff like this onto a notepad and send it to me.” Posting a second photo of himself on top of a drum set with one leg raised, he added: “Hope this camp pic doesn’t put you off any meals today dahlings.”

Fellow broadcasters and fans were quick to rally behind the presenter. TV host Carol Vorderman said: “What terrible spelling,” and “I wonder if he/she (obviously not they) can spell CYNTAF? or even lululululululul?”

Dr Ranj Singh wrote: “We love your raving puffiness” and another user commented: “This is almost as awful as their spelling and grammar.” Steps Lisa Scott-Lee added: “Don’t listen. They do not know what a beautiful person you are inside and out and I’m sad for them because they will never get to know. Keep shining bright.”

Strictly's It Takes Two presenter Rylan Clarke joked that he was the one that wrote it: “I was having a bad morning". Owain himself even promised to “ramp up the double entendres and side looks to the camera with a pursed lip as the festive period approaches.”
