North West's best civil engineers recognised in one of region's first virtual awards ceremonies since Covid-19 outbreak

Civil engineers who have worked on successful projects including railway stations, hotels and flyover deconstructions have been recognised in one of the region's first virtual awards ceremonies since the Covid-19 outbreak.

The North West’s best civil engineers were recognised on Thursday after the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) North West had to cancel its much-anticipated annual event due to coronavirus.

Nominees from civil engineering firms across the region were invited to join a live online awards ceremony to hear who had won this year’s prestigious awards, which recognise excellence and imaginative concepts in civil engineering practice.

Nine winners were announced at the digital ceremony including awards for best large, medium and small civil engineering projects which were won by Warrington West railway station, Newton-Le-Willows railway station and the A54 Buxton Road Safety Improvements, respectively.

The ‘Constructability’ award focuses on the collaborative approach to temporary works and buildability and was won by the Churchill Way flyover deconstruction project in Liverpool.

Other categories included best Community Project, Heritage and Diversity which were won by Campus Whitehaven, Thirlmere Aqueduct, and the Building Equality alliance.

A number of individuals also received awards including Joanna Bateman of WSP for North West STEM Volunteer of the Year and Martyn Frackelton of Mott MacDonald for Mentor of the Year.

Emma Antrobus, director of the Institution of Civil Engineers North West, said; “Our annual awards showcase some of the fantastic civil engineering that’s happening across the region.

“It took a bit of organising but we’re so pleased to have been able to go ahead with this year’s awards in a different way, shining a light on some of the most innovative and beneficial civil engineering which has taken place in our region over the past 12 months.

“It is particularly at challenging times like this that we should be championing every individual who keeps our society functioning. I’d like to congratulate everyone who won and thank all the attendees for taking the time to join our online ceremony.”

The ICE North West awards celebrates recently completed projects, the region's civil engineering heritage and individual excellence in the engineering profession.
