North West Mountain Rescue Team volunteer to run 100km over Co Antrim peaks for charity

A retired dentist is to run 100km over some of Northern Ireland’s most mountainous terrain to raise cash for a volunteer rescue team.

Robin Alexander will take on a trail that covers the three peaks of Slieveanorra, Trostan and Lurig in Co Antrim to help buy equipment for the North West Mountain Rescue Team.

Robin, himself a volunteer with the NWMRT, will run from Portstewart to Cushendall on July 24.

The Ballymena Runners member says: “Living and working in Ballymena I soon became aware that the volunteers of the North West Mountain Rescue Team play a key role in coming to the aid of those lost or injured on the uplands. From bases in Ballymena, Magherafelt and Enniskillen they cover all of Northern Ireland aside from 12 peaks in the Mournes.

“I find being an active member of the Mountain Rescue Team very satisfying and my sponsored run will help continue upgrading our equipment. For example, a set of titanium wheels for a stretchers cost over £2,000 yet make extracting a casualty so much easier and safer in all weathers.”

Robin has previously run the Ballymena Runners 5 and 10km Broughshane Fun Runs in aid of the North West Mountain Rescue Service. This year the races are planned for 7pm on Mon, August 2.
