North West Ambulance Service issue warning of delays amid 'high number of 999 calls'

North West Ambulance Service has warned of delays as it deals with a 'high number of 999 calls'.

In a post on Twitter at around 8.40pm on Friday, the service said the 'most serious emergencies' were being prioritised.

The service also warned that delays are to be expected this evening.

The post said: "We’re currently dealing with a high number of 999 calls and we’re prioritising the most serious emergencies

"If you no longer need an ambulance, please call us back to let us know

"For urgent care advice, visit http://111.nhs.uk."

It comes after the Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust warned earlier today that the A&E department at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary was 'very busy'.

In a post on Facebook at around 1.30pm, the trust said: "Our Emergency Department is currently very busy.

"Please only attend A&E for emergencies and life-threatening conditions.

"There are a number of services that can help you, think 111 first. They will help you right away. #111First #HelpUsHelpYou."
