North West 200 delayed by weather and red flag incidents in Supersport race

Saturday's racing at the 2019 North West 200 was delayed by the weather and red flag incidents in two separate runnings of the opening Supersport race.

Persistent rain during the morning saw conditions around the Triangle circuit deteriorate, with lying water on many sections.

The opening Supersport race was delayed until after 11am, with riders going out on three sighting laps to test the conditions.

When the racing did start, the leaders had just finished their first lap when there was a red flag incident at Black Hill.

The rider involved was not seriously injured.

James Hillier led from Alastair Seeley, Peter Hickman and Lee Johnston after the first circuit, but it wasn't long before the riders were returning to the paddock.

Michael Dunlop was a retirement on his MD Racing Honda.

The race was re-run just after 1.30pm but it was again red flagged on the second lap.

Alastair Seeley's bike started blowing blue smoke out the back as he approached University Corner, prompting concerns over oil on the track.

English rider Gary Johnson, who was racing behind Seeley at the time, said: “I am coming to University flat in sixth gear, there is a wall of water and then a massive cloud of blue smoke.

"An engine has blown up, or something, and we are travelling at 160mph. I don’t want to hit oil. If there is oil on the track we have to assess the situation.

"There is actually pretty good grip out there, it is just parts of track at Mather’s Chicane. But the main corners, the grip is good.

"Conditions are okay, but the standing water, spray an visibility are making it difficult.”
