North Wales retail park's remarkable turnaround after pandemic closed key occupiers

It's no secret that chain store retail has been badly hit in the pandemic - with some brands going under and others cutting back their portfolio.

The evidence of this has been pretty clear on a key North Wales retail park.

Since the start of the pandemic Parc Llandudno has lost Laura Ashley, Monsoon Accessorize, Outfit, and Debenhams, which had been an anchor store on the park.

With the exception of Monsoon the closures were part of a disappearance of brands from UK high streets rather than any reflection on the trading environment in the seaside resort.

But the closures left huge gaps on the shopping park that was close to full prior to the Covid-19 crisis.

However the strength of the retail sector in the town has been demonstrated in the way the park is now recovering.

Regatta has already moved into the Monsoon Accessorize unit to add a new name to the park.

Marks and Spencer has also confirmed it will take on the Debenhams store - with plans to relocate from Mostyn Street next spring, although this does then leave a gap on the town's high street.

Now The Range has confirmed it wants the Outfit store and proposes to expand the unit with a mezzanine floor and a new garden centre to the side of the site.

If the plan gets the go-ahead it will bring the park back up to near capacity, showing the remarkable resilience of the town's retail sector.

This was highlighted by a recent study that found transactions in the town centre for July were 46% up on 2019.

That figure was the highest increase for any town centre in the UK.

The report said: "Staycations are booming and the North Wales resort of Llandudno has benefited more than anywhere else, with a 46% uptick in transactions compared to the same period in 2019."
