North Tyneside GP practice sets vaccination record with 40,000 jabs given

The Oxford Centre in North Tyneside delivered more vaccinations in the first weeks of the national programme than any other Primary Care Network in England.

Up to this week, GP practices in area had delivered 40,000 jabs from the start of their programme in mid December.

Dr James Lunn said: "We have not only delivered vaccinations to our vulnerable population but we have now raised more than £8,500 for Water Aid in the process.

"It was a tremendous day for our network and it demonstrates how responsive we have been locally.

"Our patients and health and social care staff have played a vital role too in coming at short notice to vaccination centres in all manner of weather conditions.

"We've managed to achieve this without long queues of people waiting with an average time of ten minutes in the vaccination centre.

"That’s a tribute to the volunteers, council, local NHS and the network of GPs.

"Whilst we can deliver 7500 vaccinations a week, we are limited only by the supply of vaccines which understandably is variable as other areas now seek to catch up with the North east."

The 40,000 vaccinations so far have met Government targets 'with time to spare' and 'at record pace', he added.

The North east has been one of the most successful in the country in delivering the vaccine.

Newcastle was one of the first cities in the country to offer jabs to all its care home staff and residents. In North Tyneside, teams of pharmacists were drafted in to assist doctors, nurses and reception staff to deliver jabs with a series of booths protected by perspex screens.

Working 12-hour shifts, from 8am to 8pm, they give vaccine first to vulnerable groups, starting with the elderly.
