North Tyneside Council to have their say over plans to bring 3,000 jobs to Northumberland

North Tyneside Council has been asked its views on proposals for a battery factory that could create thousands of new jobs.

As reported by the Chronicle, plans for a 'gigafactory' in Blyth that are hoped to being 3,000 jobs to the region have been submitted to Northumberland County Council.

Electric vehicle battery manufacturer Britishvolt is behind a planning application for the scheme on the site of the former Blyth Power Station.

It is hoped that the scheme could create a total of 8,000 new jobs over its plant and supply chain.

Northumberland Council has written to North Tyneside Council asking for its views on the scheme saying it had until late April to comment.

A letter said: "This development is a Major development and it affects a right of way and the setting of a listed building.

"I shall be pleased to receive your observations by 21st April 2021."

The company says it is in talks with some of the world's largest car manufacturers and is well on track to raise the funding needed to make the plant a reality.

It urged people in the area to back the plans so that it can meet the tight timescales it has set to get the factory up and running by 2023.

Britishvolt chairman Peter Rolton said: “There’s a number of gigafactories being considered in Europe and only so many manufacturers of equipment so we want the order in and confirmed because that’s how we can guarantee production for the back end of 2023.”
