North Tyneside Council 'seeking clarification' from Government after change to travel advice

Bosses at North Tyneside Council are trying to clarify the Government's advice around travel in and out of the borough as it continues its battle against Covid.

The Government is advising against all but essential travel in eight areas of England - including North Tyneside - where the coronavirus variant first identified in India is spreading.

In North Tyneside, there have been around 40 confirmed cases of the Indian variant so far.

However, it has been revealed there was no communication between central Government and North Tyneside Council before the advice to avoid non-essential travel was published.

The authority has now released a statement explaining what happened and what the current situation is.

Wendy Burke, director of public health for North Tyneside, said: "Last Wednesday it was announced in Parliament that North Tyneside, along with five other areas in England, would be subject to enhanced testing and vaccinations.

"When the announcement was made there was no indication it would come with any additional restrictions for North Tyneside or the other areas.

"We understand that, later, Government guidance around travel in and out of North Tyneside was posted on the Government website.

"This has not been accompanied by any communication to the local authority, local residents or businesses.

"We have already queried this with the Department of Health and Social Care to seek clarification.

"We will continue to work with Government on our enhanced testing and vaccination plan which is now in place."

Surge testing has been taking place in the borough at sites in North Shields and Wallsend town centres.

On Monday, a third site in Shiremoor was opened to the public.

Extra vaccination capacity is also being provided to help battle the virus.

People in North Tyneside are being encouraged to make use of the three PCR test sites if they do not have symptoms of coronavirus.
