North Tyneside Council 2019 local election results IN FULL: How every candidate scored

Labour remains comfortably in control in North Tyneside despite losing two seats to the Tories.

Overall, from the Conservatives but lost Tynemouth and Cullercoats to them.

It was a close fight in all three wards.

In Tynemouth, Tory Lewis Bartoli triumphed over Labour's Karen Bolger by just 222 votes, while the gap between Monkseaton North winner, Labour's Paul Richardson, and second place, Conservative Lewis Austin, was only 102.

The new make-up of the council is - Labour 51, Conservative 7, Liberal Democrats 1 and Independent 1.

Turnout for the election was 34.9%.

Labour Mayor Norma Redfearn said their campaigners found that voters had been affected by national issues.

She added: "I'm quite delighted with the result. I expected a good deal worse, particularly in light of the national picture.

"It's quite refreshing that people still have some faith in us and believe in us.

"We lost two seats but gained one as well. I think that's a good result for us."

Conservative leader for North Tyneside, Judith Wallace, said she was pleased with the result.

She added: "We are delighted at getting a councillor back in Cullercoats ward and to have taken the Tynemouth seat.

"The councillors, Lewis Bartoli and Ken Barrie, both fought very hard campaigns and are very effective councillors.

"We knew we would get a good result because of the response we were getting on the doorstep. We knew that people were getting dissatisfied with the council."
