North Tyneside 10k Road Race put off till next year due to ongoing coronavirus crisis

A popular race has been cancelled for this year as the coronavirus crisis continues.

The North Tyneside 10k Road Race, often described as one of the region's most scenic races, was originally scheduled to take place on April 12, Easter Sunday.

But the event had to be postponed after lockdown restrictions were put in place across the country. It was then due to take place on October 18.

However, North Tyneside Council has now announced that the event will have to be cancelled altogether for this year and will be organised for next Easter, April 4.

A spokesperson said: "We have taken the difficult decision to further postpone this year’s North Tyneside 10k Road Race, scheduled for Sunday 18 October. The revised date will be Easter Sunday, 4 April, 2021.

"We've explored ways that we could deliver this year's event differently but with the ongoing Covid-19 situation and significant logistical challenges around social distancing, we must put the safety of all competitors and our staff first.

"Entries will be automatically rolled over to the new date. Your place remains valid and you don’t need to take any further action.

"If you are unable to make the revised date, you can claim a full refund. Please email events@northtyneside.gov.uk with your full address, sort code and account number and we'll get it processed as quickly as possible.

"Thank you for all your patience and support - we look forward to seeing you in April."

The annual race, which starts at The Parks Sports Centre in North Shields, takes in views of the Fish Quay, the River Tyne, Tynemouth Priory and Castle and a long stretch of coastline before finishing at St Mary's Lighthouse in Whitley Bay.

Runners travel from across the UK to compete in the 6.2 mile coastal course.
