Why North Texas Will Win
Mason Fine and the offense is working.
It was only Abilene Christian, but the Mean Green did what they were supposed to do with 38 points in the first half. Fine threw for 383 yards and four scores – with three of them going to Jason Pirtle – and now they’re about to go off on the SMU secondary.
Arkansas State was able to rip up the Mustangs with 324 yards and four scores through the air, and the UNT offense is even sharper. SMU got a little bit of pressure in the backfield, but it won’t get to Fine enough – he gets the ball out of his hands in a hurry.
Why SMU Will Win
The Mustang offense was able to bust out right away with its new quarterback. The defense had problems with Arkansas State, but Texas transfer Shane Buechele threw for 360 yards, Xavier Jones ran for three touchdowns, and there’s more than enough offense to keep up.
The ground game didn’t do too much against the Red Wolves, but the Mustangs have to give it a shot. Abilene Christian not only threw deep, but it averaged over five yards per carry. Moving the ball won’t be a problem.

What’s Going To Happen
Get ready for a fun and wild firefight. North Texas was able to win at home against SMU 46-23 to start last season, and it’s going to be in for a bigger battle. Buechele is a difference-maker, SMU is sharper than it was throughout last year, and this time around, it’s going to make one more big play than the Mean Green will. The last team with the ball might win.
