North Somerset's moving Covid tributes - more than 300 candles lit on anniversary of first death

Hundreds of candles were lit on the steps of Weston-super-Mare Town Hall - to remember those who have lost their lives to covid 19.

On 14 March 2020, North Somerset - which has a population of around 220,000 people - lost its first resident to coronavirus.

Nailsea man Nick Matthews, aged 59, died on March 14, 2020 after contracting the virus.

Former policeman Mr Matthews tested positive for coronavirus and had a pre-existing medical condition.

His was the first confirmed coronavirus related death in North Somerset.

In the year that has passed since then local communities have lost 334 people to the disease.

A total of 334 candles were lit - one to signify each life lost - in the moving tribute.

Local people were also asked to joint the act of remembrance by lighting candles in their window at 7pm on Sunday.

North Somerset Council leader Councillor Don Davies said: "The past year has been hard for everyone, but especially for those of us who have lost someone and not been able to mourn or pay our respects in the usual way.

“We have all lost someone, or know someone who has lost someone.

“This was about us come together for a moment of quiet reflection and to remember all those who are no longer with us."

Case rates in North Somerset continue to fall due to the third Government lockdown and the national vaccine roll out.

Latest data - up until Friday, March 12 - 77 new cases have been identified in the latest seven-day period reported for North Somerset compared with 107 the previous week.

The case rate per 100,000 head of population has continued to decrease and is now 35.8 compared with a South West figure of 33.1, and an England rate of 60.3.
