North Shields woman wins £50,000 National Bingo jackpot on her 'unlucky number'

Delighted Angela Lockhart won the £50,000 National Bingo jackpot after her 'unlucky number' came up.

Bus driver Angela, 61, from North Shields was playing at Hay Heaton Bingo in Newcastle last weekend when she got a feeling her luck was about to change after the game started.

To win the £50,000 jackpot in the National Bingo Game you have to call Bingo in 16 numbers or less. "I got the first four numbers which was very unusual," said Angela.

And her numbers kept coming up until she had the last one to get - 18. "It's my unlucky number," said Angela. "I've missed out on prizes before because of not getting it."

However this time fate smiled on her and 18 was called on the 15th number, meaning Angela landed the top prize.

"It all happened so quickly. It was over in about two or three minutes. People were saying 'she's got it and then the caller said I'd won the national prize. It was just so exciting."

Angela who has been playing bingo since her teens as won a few prizes over the years but none as big as this.

She had just gone to bingo last Sunday for a bit of relaxation after a busy time on the buses doing extra shifts for Go North East.

As for what she's going to do with her winnings, she said: "I'm going to get a new cooker as I have a lot of people round for Christmas. I'm off to Curry's at the weekend."

She says she'll see her two grown up children and eight grandchildren right too, and meanwhile there's a celebration this weekend back at Hay Heaton Bingo.

"I'll be buying a round of drinks and putting some money behind the bar for staff who were working when I won," said Angela.

General Manager Davy Parker-Hay, who was also the Caller on the game, said: "The atmosphere was phenomenal. When she won the place absolutely erupted."

He said it was family business. "My sister-in-law Jenny Hay sold her the ticket and it was only by chance I was the Caller. The actual Caller got tied up with another customer."

.This Sunday there's a special party there for members to celebrate Angela's win.

There'll be a glass of fizz on arrival while Angela has put money behind the bar for people to have a free drink too. Angela will be presented with her cheque at 8pm and there will also be entertainment.
