North Sea ship crash captain denies manslaughter of crew member

  • Vladimir Motin, the Russian captain of the container ship Solong, has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter in the death of crew member Mark Angelo Pernia after a collision with a US oil tanker.
  • The collision with the Stena Immaculate occurred on 10 March off the East Yorkshire coast near the Humber Estuary, resulting in an explosion on the forward deck of the Solong where Mr Pernia was working.
  • All 23 people on the tanker and 13 crew members from the Solong were rescued, but Mr Pernia, a Filipino national, could not be found.
  • The Solong, carrying about 157 containers, was travelling at about 15 knots when it collided with the anchored Stena Immaculate, which was carrying jet fuel.
  • Judge Mark Lucraft KC set a further hearing for 10 September, with the trial scheduled for 12 January 2026 at the Old Bailey.
