North Sea explorer appoints industry veteran to board

North Sea oil and gas firm Hurricane Energy has appointed industry veteran Beverley Smith as a non-executive director.

Geologist Smith has 30 years’ experience in the upstream oil and gas sector and during her career with BG Group she held roles including vice president exploration & growth for Europe. Hurricane said Smith has a “proven track record of strengthening risk management capabilities, delivering improved safety frameworks and ensuring accountability and transparency through the implementation of robust processes and controls”.

The recruitment of Smith means half of Hurricane’s board - excluding the chairman -  are independent non-executive directors in line with the Financial Reporting Council’s UK Corporate Governance Code 2018.

Chairman Steven McTiernan said: “Beverley's distinguished career in oil and gas exploration and development brings highly relevant technical, strategic and management experience which will significantly enhance the capabilities of the board. These skills will be invaluable as Hurricane progresses its Rona Ridge assets towards full field development.”

Last week Hurricane Energy said output from its flagship North Sea field has come in ahead of forecasts in the last three months. Production of around 12,500 barrels of oil per day, compared to guidance for the quarter for the quarter of 11,000 barrels, is expected to see Hurricane’s total production for the financial year top 3 million barrels.

It is thought the Lancaster reservoir in the West of Shetland area could hold more than 500 million barrels of oil.
