North Melbourne deemed safe after police arrest man, evacuate businesses over bomb scare

A busy road in North Melbourne has reopened after the police Bomb Response Unit deemed a suspicious device was not a threat.

Police arrested a 25-year-old man who was found with the device, and he remains in custody.

The scare prompted police to evacuate businesses along Racecourse Road and close a section of the road about 10:00am while officers conducted a safety check.

Police said they were unsure what the device was.

Racecourse Road has been reopened and trams have resumed normal service.
