A rogue landlord has been fined nearly £20,000 for renting out a north London home to five people without the correct license.
Haringey Council found that a home in Duckett’s Green, near Turnpike Lane Tube station, had been rented out by room and had not been signed up to the council’s scheme.
Council officers uncovered in November 2024 that the home had been operating as a House of Multiple Occupancy (HMO) since August 2023.
After uncovering a tenancy agreement, they found the property did not have a license and that three different households had been living at the home at the same time.
The landlord was fined £23,500, after the size of their portfolio and knowledge of housing regulations had been taken into account.
Haringey also found that the landlord had other properties that had already been licensed under the council’s scheme.
The fine was reduced to £19,975 thanks to a new policy which allowed him to get a 15% discount for paying the fine within 28 days.
Haringey Council’s Deputy Leader Sarah Williams said: “Landlords who knowingly breach licensing laws will not get away with it - we’re taking firm action, and the consequences are real.”
The councillor added: “These rules aren’t optional. Tenants deserve safe, well-kept homes, and we won’t tolerate those who undermine that standard.
“We remain committed in our mission to enforce housing law and defend the rights of renters across the borough.”
