Thieves have been cashing in on an upsurge in cycling during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Police in North Lanarkshire say that, while more folk have been taking to the saddle, there’s been a rise in thefts.
Over a five-month period from the beginning of lockdown, 108 bikes were stolen across the area.
Lizanne McMurrich, North Lanarkshire Council’s head of communities, said: “More people are using pedal cycles for commuting, exercise and recreation and people are staying local for holidays, taking their bikes with them.
“Unfortunately, this means that there are more bikes out there that can become a target for crime.”
A series of security marking events is taking place in a bid to make it easier to have stolen bikes returned to their owners.
CCTV could also help tackle the problem.
Ms McMurrich’s latest report to councillors praised the use of cameras in reducing criminal activity.
Mobile cameras were deployed following complaints of anti-social behaviour in areas of Shotts and Newmains.
They also helped in Hattonrigg Road, Bellshill, where residents were angry at wheelie bins being stolen and set on fire.
Ms McMurrich added: “Cameras support the various actions being taken to combat community safety issues.
“Significant reductions in the level of disorder and anti-social behaviour have been demonstrated.”
