North Lanarkshire pupils experience Microsoft Teams issues on first day of term

Pupils and teachers in North Lanarkshire have been among those affected by difficulties with Microsoft Teams on the first day of online learning for the new school term.

The platform is being used by schools across the country to deliver remote lessons, with most youngsters currently studying at home for at least the next three weeks due to the current coronavirus restrictions.

Users from across the country reported access problems or slow running as the new term got under way this morning.

A spokesman for North Lanarkshire Council told the Airdrie and Coatbridge Advertiser: “There was a problem across the country with Microsoft experiencing issues with the Teams service today.

“Our schools have informed parents about this and are providing pupils with alternative digital learning options until this issue is resolved.”

The local authority also uses online platform Glow to deliver home lessons, as well as resources from its own “digital school”.

Nicola Sturgeon also referenced the issue at her First Minister’s briefing today, saying: “This is not an issue that is unique to Scotland or to school, but I understand Microsoft is currently working to address it.”

Users contacting the Microsoft Teams account on Twitter were told: “We’re currently investigating a potential issue affecting Teams access for some users in the UK”; with a Teams update from the company reading: “Iinitial reports indicate this may be specific to users based in the UK and northern Europe.”
