North Lanarkshire marks Holocaust Memorial Day

North Lanarkshire Council is marking today’s Holocaust Memorial Day by illuminating its headquarters building in purple.

Holocaust Memorial Day is held on January 27 each year – the anniversary of liberation of the largest Nazi-run death camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau, in 1945.

It remembers the six million Jewish people killed during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other victims of Holocausts in other parts of the world including Bosnia, Cambodia, Darfur and Rwanda.

This year’s theme is “be the light in the darkness” – reflecting the horror of what occurred, and also the bravery and resistance of so many who resisted this darkness.

People are also being encouraged to light a candle and place it in their windows, as part of a campaign to encourage remembrance being run by the Holocaust Memorial Trust.

North Lanarkshire provost Jean Jones said: “Today is such an important occasion as we remember the terrible human cost of Holocaust.

“It is vital these harrowing tragedies are never forgotten and we must try to prevent future genocides and create a better safer future for everyone.”

The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust will stream a ceremony online at 7pm, asking people to light a candle an hour later.
