North Lanarkshire is marking armed forces’ day by flying a special flag at its Motherwell headquarters.
The annual event “gives the public the opportunity to recognise the contribution made on behalf of the nation by the men and women currently serving as troops, veterans and cadets”, with the occasion being marked on Saturday, June 26.
Provost Jean Jones and North Lanarkshire armed forces champion David Cullen, the Airdrie North councillor, raised the flag in a ceremony at the civic centre.
They were joined by Lady Susan Haughey, the lord lieutenant of Lanarkshire, plus council chief executive Des Murray and senior police and fire service representatives.
Provost Jones said: “Each year we raise a flag in support of our forces personnel, past and present; they provide safety and security and we are proud to acknowledge their vital contribution and show our support for the sacrifices they continue to make for their country.
“Unfortunately, because of the ongoing coronavirus restrictions, we can’t have the larger ceremony we like to have on these occasions – when we usually have veterans, members of the public and representatives from the forces and emergency services present.”
Councillor Cullen added: “Armed forces day gives us the chance to show our appreciation for the selfless sacrifice and dedication of our service personnel.
“The health pandemic has proven challenging for everyone, and our armed forces have once again come to the fore by helping support efforts reduce the spread of the virus, set up and manage testing sites, hospital facilities and provide expert support to help the nationwide effort to administer the vaccine.”
He added: “This occasion is marked across the country and we are pleased to play our part here in North Lanarkshire.”
