North Lanarkshire councillor to appear in court over sexual abuse charge

A councillor is to appear in court today after being charged in connection with sexual abuse.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We can confirm that a 37-year-old man has been charged in connection with non-recent sexual abuse. The man is due to appear at Airdrie Sheriff Court on Thursday, 16 July."

It is understood the man is Mark John Kerr, who was elected on an SNP ticket to serve the Kilsyth ward on the local authority.

An SNP spokesperson said: “Mr Kerr has stepped down from the SNP pending police investigation of a matter that we understand to have pre-dated his election to North Lanarkshire Council.”

According to his register of interest, he sits on seven council committees, as well as the local review body.

He is also listed as being on Clyde and Loch Lomond Local District Joint Committee, and Strathclyde Partnership for Transport.
