North Lanarkshire councillor charged in connection with historic sexual abuse

A NORTH Lanarkshire councillor has been charged in connection with historic sexual abuse.

Mark John Kerr, who represents the Kilsyth ward, appeared at Airdrie Sheriff Court yesterday, Thursday, July 16, where he was charged with five sexual offences.

He made no plea and was bailed.

A date for for his next court appearance is still to be arranged.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We can confirm that a 37-year-old man has been charged in connection with non-recent sexual abuse.”

Councillor Kerr has left the SNP, where he acted as communications officer for the party’s North Lanarkshire group.

An SNP spokesperson said: “Mr Kerr has stepped down from the SNP pending police investigation of a matter that we understand to have pre-dated his election to North Lanarkshire Council.”

According to his register of interest, he sits on seven council committees, as well as the local review body.

He is also listed as being on Clyde and Loch Lomond Local District Joint Committee, and Strathclyde Partnership for Transport.
