North Lanarkshire Council spend £2m patching up potholes in last three years

North Lanarkshire Council spent more than £2 million repairing potholes in the past three years.

The stats, revealed to the Wishaw Press through a Freedom of Information request, also revealed most of the cash the council spent was in 2017/18 with £936,000 splashed to repair the ruined roads.

Over 7,000 potholes were reported to the local authority last year with the council paying out £11,650 in claims to 110 drivers.

Over 4,200 potholes were reported in 2017 with a further 4,200 in 2016.

The council spent £472,000 repairing roads in 2016/17 and £642,000 in 2015/16.

Seventy-one drivers were paid over £7,000 in 2017 with 96 drivers claiming back almost £13,500 in 2016.

A council spokesperson said: “We undertake an ongoing programme of works to maintain the 1,600 km of roads in North Lanarkshire, with an annual spend of £6.5 million.

“The number of potholes on our roads network at any time is affected by a number of factors including weather and the quantity and type of traffic using the road, and the period of severe weather in February 2018 had a significant impact on the condition of our roads.

“In addition, we undertake routine inspections of our road network to identify and arrange repairs for any safety defects found. We also action enquiries raised through the council’s customer services portal, Northline. These actions are designed to keep our road network safe for road users.

“Overall, the condition of the roads in North Lanarkshire is significantly better than the Scottish average.”
