North Lanarkshire Council planners recommend refusal of Newmains industrial site

Planners are set to reject an application to redevelop an industrial site in Newmains.

Proposals had been submitted to North Lanarkshire Council for the redevelopment of the site at land to the south of School Road.

The plans included the installation of 24 business unit with associated parking, infrastructure, landscaping and boundary treatments.

However, council planners have recommended the refusal of the application although the development proposals will go before councillors at the next planning meeting on Monday, March 28.

According to the report, the application is considered contrary to the Local Plan and there are no material considerations sufficient to warrant approval of the development.

In its report, council planners conclude: “The site is an existing industrial and commercial site where the owner wishes to carry out a comprehensive redevelopment the site and double the size of the existing floorspace.

“Despite benefits of economic development and visual amenity, there remains significant concerns regarding road safety and residential amenity and therefore on balance and with regret it is concluded that planning permission should be refused.”

The council noted that there were 16 letters of objection to the plans with 17 comments of support.

Points of objection included that access via Victoria Street would be detrimental to existing houses, there was little information provided about end use of units proposed and a public right of way gifted to the community being blocked by development.

Those supporting the plans noted that Newmains had been underdeveloped for too long and that the development would bring much needed new business and redevelopment to the local area.

Supporters also noted that new businesses will bring much needed income and would provide opportunities for new businesses to start and evolve.
