North Lanarkshire Council increases council tax by almost five per cent

COUNCIL tax is going up by 4.84 per cent for Airdrie and Coatbridge householders from April 1.

North Lanarkshire Council agreed to the increase at the authority’s budget meeting on Monday morning.

Both the Labour and SNP groups proposed the same increase – the maximum allowed for 2020-2021 – in their budget papers, while the Conservative group had proposed a lower increase, suggesting that householders’ bill rise by three per cent for a third consecutive year.

It means the bill for a Band D property will rise to £1221.25, from the current figure of £1164.87, and councillors said: “This represents an increase of around £1.08 per week at the band D equivalent rate.”

Annual bills in North Lanarkshire for 2020-2021 will now range from £814.17 per year for band A properties, to £2992.06 for band H.

The 4.84 per cent rise received 57 votes from councillors, with seven supporting the Conservatives’ figure, while there was one abstention.

North Lanarkshire councillors spent Monday at their annual budget meeting, and will be making cuts of £31 million to balance the books for the year ahead.
