North Lanarkshire Council has agreed a new Community Safety Strategy to tackle anti-social behaviour and violence and disorder on the streets of Wishaw.
The strategy is a five year plan to get to grips with what residents say are their local priorities over the coming years.
A Community Safety Strategic Group was established in 2019 to progress the development and implementation of the new Community Safety Strategy.
It reviewed a range of available evidence and data to help identify the key community safety issues, challenges and priorities for North Lanarkshire.
Consultation was carried out with a range of stakeholders and included activities such as online surveys, a stakeholder event, local briefings, presentations and community matters engagement opportunities.
The draft strategy was also published on the council’s website for consultation.
The strategy was agreed at the Community Empowerment Committee earlier this month.
Committee convener, Councillor Angela Campbell, said: “Community safety is the number one priority for us as councillors and this five year plan will help us tackle what residents tell us is most important to them.
“Tackling anti-social behaviour, reducing serious violence and disorder, reducing harm from unintentional injury and fire, tackling gender based violence, protecting people at risk of harm and improving road safety – all of these crucial issues are being addressed with this new strategy.
“It’s sometimes easy for councils, particularly during unprecedented times like a pandemic, to lose focus on community issues.
“But this strategy shows that, despite the current challenges, this Labour administration is still very much focused on the day job.”
