North Lanarkshire care home residents get connected thanks to new project

Residents in care homes across North Lanarkshire have been supported in getting online thanks to a project run by the council.

Following a pilot scheme at the Kerr Grieve sheltered housing complex in Motherwell, some 200 devices are being distributed to residents across the local authority by a working group.

That's led by Margaret Greer, from the Northern Corridor Community Board, and Alex Clark, from Cumbernauld Community Board, with support in the form of 'digital champions' who help the residents use the devices in ways most interesting to them.

This equipment is funded via the Scottish Government's Connecting Scotland programme.

Successes are already being reported - in Allershaw Tower in Wishaw the retirement officer has set up a weekly class and drop-in sessions for the tenants to bring their devices and learn more about them.

Through digital means, they are connecting to family that they previously could not connect to.

This news was reported to the council's Transformation and Digitisation Committee at a recent online session where it was welcomed by members.

Progress is also being made to involve local primary schools in the programme, forming links between tenants and pupils attending P6 and P7.
