North Korea has said working-level nuclear talks with the US have been called off, just hours after they restarted.
Officials from both countries met in Sweden on Saturday, in the hope of breaking their stalemate.
North Korea’s chief negotiator, Kim Myong Gil, told reporters: "The negotiations have not fulfilled our expectation and finally broke off.”
The meeting came days after North Korea tested a new submarine-launched ballistic missile, in a significant step up from earlier tests.
UN Security Council resolutions ban Pyongyang from using ballistic missile technology and the launch was seen as a provocative step from North Korea since it resumed talks with the US in 2018.
It stood as a reminder of the rogue state’s weapons capability that it has been aggressively developing, analysts said.
US President Donald Trump and North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un have held two summits so far.
Dramatic photos showed the missile clearing the surface of the water as rocket engine ignited to propel it into the sky.
The North officially confirmed in the early hours of Thursday that it had successfully test-fired the new missile.
The first, in Singapore in 2018, ended in a vague denuclearisation agreement and the second in Vietnam in 2019 ended early without any agreement.
