Kim Jong-un received a personal letter from US president Donald Trump, which he described as “of excellent content”, according to state media.
North Korea's state-run news agency KCNA did not give details on its contents but said Mr Kim praised the letter, in a report published early on Sunday.
"Kim Jong-un said that he would seriously contemplate the interesting content," the report said.
Mr Kim also praised Mr Trump’s “extraordinary courage”.
Earlier this month, Mr Trump said a beautiful letter had been sent to him by the North Korean leader.
US-North Korea talks have been stalled since a failed summit in February between Mr Trump and the North Korean leader in Hanoi, Vietnam.
A US official said on Wednesday the United States had no pre-conditions for new talks, but that progress would require meaningful and verifiable North Korean steps to abandon its nuclear weapons program.
The US has insisted North Korea stop its nuclear programme while Pyongyang has demanded sanctions relief.
But in recent months Mr Trump has spoken warmly about Mr Kim.
Earlier this month he told reporters that the country had “tremendous potential” under Mr Kim's leadership.
During Mr Trump’s visit to Japan in May he also describe Mr Kim as a “very smart guy” and said he expected “a lot of good things” to come out of North Korea.
The US president is due to visit South Korea next week for meetings with South Korean President Moon Jae-in after taking part in the G20 meetings in Japan.
White House officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
