North Korea fires two ballistic missiles into sea in threat to US on Thanksgiving

North Korea has test-fired two ballistic missiles in a new threat to Donald Trump as America celebrates its Thanksgiving holiday.

The 13th launch of the year happened at about 5pm local time as Pyongyang launched the projectiles from a "super large multiple rocket launcher", according to South Korea's military.

The missiles flew for 236 miles at an altitude of 60 miles before crashing into waters between North Korea and Japan.

South Korea said the projectiles were launched from a site near Yonpo, a region where the North has an air base.

The launch came a a day after Seoul's military fired warning shots at a North Korean merchant boat.

The test-firing was most likely watched by dictator Kim Jong-un, who has been pictured looking through binoculars and laughing with military chiefs at previous launches.

In October, Pyongyang fired two ballistic missiles into the Sea of Japan, also known as the East Sea, with both flying for 230 miles at an altitude of 56 miles.

Those missiles were fired a day after Kim sent a surprise condolence message to South Korean President Moon Jae-in over the passing of his mother.

North Korea usually fires missiles in the morning, but the last two launches have taken place on Thursday afternoons.

After the latest launch, Japan's government condemned the act as a "serious issue for the entire international community".

It was the 13th launch this year amid a breakdown in talks with the US about denuclearisation on the Korean Peninsula and sanctions that have crippled Pyongyang.

North Korea had recently warned the US it was losing patience over the stalled talks.

Relations between the North and South have cooled in recent months following a number of meetings between Kim and Moon and summits involving Kim and the US president.

Talks aimed at denuclearisation have stalled, although there were signs that Pyongyang and Washington could hold a third summit in the future.

North Korea has hit out at South Korea and the US for staging joint military drills that it sees as preparation for an invasion.

On Wednesday, South Korea's military fired warning shots towards a North Korean merchant boat with engine trouble that violated their sea border on Wednesday, Seoul said.

The South Korean military issued a warning and fired shots into the water near the ship to drive it away.

On October 3, Kim's regime announced that it had successfully test-fired a new submarine-launched ballistic missile from the sea.

It said the weapon was necessary to protect the North from external threats and bolster self-defence.
