North Glasgow on agenda for more cycle paths as area lacks active travel routes

Plans to build more cycle paths in the north and south of Glasgow are moving closer as councillors prepare to accept £2.1 million in funding.

About £1.33 million of the money due to be accepted on Thursday is to be used to produce designs of paths for Glasgow North and the inner south of the city.

The north of Glasgow doesn’t have enough active travel routes according the council.

More paths could focus on areas including Cowlairs, Lambhill, Possilpark and Springburn among others.

Cycle way designs along with better walking and public realm infrastructure proposals are also to be created for the “inner south city networks.”

It is all part of the huge 270km cycle path and footway City Network plan, which will see almost everyone in Glasgow live within a few minutes easy cycling of a route by 2031.

On Thursday councillors will decide whether to accept £2.1 million from the Sustrans Places for Everyone Fund for projects.

As well as the money going to the cycling plans for the north and inner south areas of Glasgow, £590,000 would be spent on a route map for the City Network cycling ways. And £180,000 would be allocated to concept designs for the Yorkhill to Anderston liveable neighbourhood plan.

A paper to be presented to councillors at the City Administration Committee pointed out: “The projects will improve Glasgow’s urban environment and connectivity, thus leading to an improvement in a range of outcomes for the city’s population.

It added: “The proposal will assist in reducing the need to travel unsustainably and encourage people to live more locally improving the quality of place and respond to the requirements for the creation of resilient places to cope with and tackle climate change.”
