North East weather warning for snow and ice extended to Friday

A yellow weather warning for snow and ice issued for the North East has been extended to Friday.

The Met Office warning was initially extended to Wednesday, however, the wintery weather is set to continue bringing more snow and frosty temperatures.

The warning will now take place from Thursday midnight until Friday noon.

The warning states that although the snow may not be as heavy as the region has experienced over the last few days, further snow showers could bring disruption to travel in places.

The weather warning states: "Further snow showers are expected to continue to affect parts of northeast England and northern and eastern Scotland.

"Whilst these are not expected to be as heavy or widespread as earlier in the week, some persistent bands of snow showers may develop in places.

"Accumulations of 1-3 cm are likely with 5-8 cm possible where more persistent bands of snow develop. Icy stretches are possible overnight where surfaces are left wet from the partial melt of lying snow during the daytime."

Here's what to expect

  • Some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services
  • Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
  • Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths

Here the forecast for the rest of the week:

Wednesday

"Snow showers continuing through Wednesday might turn lighter and less frequent later, with some bright or sunny spells. Northeasterly winds will be less strong than of late. Feeling very cold. Maximum temperature 1 °C."

End of the week

"Drier and brighter during Thursday with light winds, Strong southeasterly winds developing for Friday and Saturday with a chance of snow showers - mainly near coasts. Staying very cold."
