North East weather set to get much hotter after days of rain as temperatures soar to 17C

The North East is set to bask in glorious 17C heat after enduring days of rainy weather this week.

After a miserable start to May, the region is set to enjoy a generous amount of sunshine over the next few days as the weather improves.

The Met Office said the weather in the North East will feel "pleasant" on Sunday after a cloudy and rainy start.

However, despite the hotter weather the region can still expect some rain which could turn heavy and thundery at the start of the week.

On Monday, things will feel particularly warm in the afternoon with a maximum temperature of 16C- although there could be some chance of hail and thunder.

And as we look to the rest of the week, the region will see sunny weather with "scattered showers developing each day", which could turn thundery.

North East weather forecast

Sunday:

Cloud and any intermittent rain will turn light and patchy and die out through the morning. Then brighter for most areas, but with a few showers following, especially across the Pennines.

Feeling pleasant in the sunnier east. Rather breezy. Maximum temperature 17°C.

Sunday night:

Evening showers dying out with some clear spells developing, although rather cloudy across some parts of the region. Winds decreasing light. Minimum temperature 3°C.

Monday:

After a bright and mainly dry start showers will develop by afternoon and turn quite heavy, with a chance of hail and thunder. Breezy by afternoon. Drier through the evening. Maximum temperature 16°C.

Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday:

Often sunny with scattered showers developing each day, these sometimes heavy and perhaps thundery.

Feeling pleasant in sunnier weather. Mainly dry if rather cool each night.
