North East weather: Return to high temperatures on Monday but thundery rain forecast too

Temperatures could hit a balmy 18C on Monday, forecasters say.

But clouds, scattered showers and even possible thunder mean it won't exactly be time to get out the barbecue after work.

And it looks like the 'mini heatwave' of the middle of last week won't be making a return any time soon.

A Met Office spokesperson said: "Often cloudy on Monday with limited bright spells. Scattered showers breaking out once again, some of these heavy and possibly thundery. Any fog clearing back to the coast."

As for the rest of the week, it looks like we'll be  continuing to oscillate between sunshine and showers for a while.

According to the Met Office, the region will see: "More in the way of sunshine with some isolated showers on Tuesday and Wednesday.

"Then further heavy showers breaking out on Thursday. Some fog possible on the coast at times."

The long-range forecast for the rest of the month suggests the weather will be "changeable" right up to the bank holiday, with "rain and showers" throughout the weekend.

At least we shouldn't get too chilly, though, with temperatures expected to stay at average or even slightly above average levels for May.
