North East weather: Met Office forecast rain with chance of thunderstorms for the weekend

Heavy rain and thunderstorms could be hitting the North East this weekend, according to the latest Met Office weather forecast.

Forecasters expect rain to hit the region, adding that showers could become "heavy and thundery". It is also expected to be breezy at times, particularly towards coastal areas.

The official forecast for Saturday is: "Cloudy throughout with spells of rain during the morning. Rain, occasionally heavy and thundery, moving northwards through the evening. Breezy at times, especially across coasts and hills. Maximum temperature 21 °C."

The outlook for Sunday to Tuesday is: "Changeable, with further bands of rain sweeping northwards across the region. These will become heavy at times with a risk of thunder. Temperatures around average."
