North East weather: Hour-by-hour forecast on Monday and Tuesday as kids go back to school

As the kids go back to school this week it will be worth making sure they wear a raincoat.

The Met Office is forecasting scattered showers for Monday and Tuesday when many children will be returning to the classroom after the summer holidays. After a rainy start on Monday, the rest of the day will turn cloudy and dry with some sunshine in the early evening. On Tuesday there will be light rain showers throughout the day, with a thunder shower expected at around 1pm in Newcastle.

A Met Office spokesman said: "Rain at first, perhaps heavy, clearing through the morning. Sunny spells developing but also some isolated heavy, perhaps thundery, showers. Showers easing later. The maximum temperature will be 23°C."

Looking ahead to Tuesday and the rest of the week, the Met Office said: "Changeable with sunny spells and outbreaks of rain and showers, some of which will be heavy with a risk of thunder. Breezy at times. Temperatures near or just above average."
