North East weather: Hour by hour forecast as region set for day of mixed weather

The North East is set for a day of mixed weather with sunny spells and heavy rain forecast.

Forecasters have predicted "a bright and sunny start" for most of the region on Tuesday morning, although "scattered cloud and isolated showers" are expected to develop through the morning.

The Met Office weather forecast for today states: "A bright and sunny start for much of the region, although some low cloud may linger over the Pennines at first.

"Scattered cloud developing during the morning with isolated showers, heavier towards the north and west. Breezy. Maximum temperature 16 °C."

These showers are set to continue through to the evening but are expected to fade away tonight. And the weather forecast for tonight states: " Heavy showers continuing over the Pennines this evening, some possibly reaching the east coast but most will fade away.

"Clear spells in places overnight and dry for most by dawn. Minimum temperature 6 °C."
