North East weather forecast: Met Office says we will see rain ahead of possible heatwave

The North East can expect a rainy start to the weekend - but this will be followed by a possible heatwave next week.

The Met Office says rain will push north and eastwards across the country, bringing showers to our region on Friday afternoon.

There is a yellow warning for thunderstorms covering Belfast, Glasgow and other parts of Scotland from 7pm on Friday to 10am on Saturday, however the Newcastle area is not within the warning zone.

Met Office spokesperson Nicola Maxey said: "Although Newcastle is not within the weather warning area, there is still a risk of thunderstorms, though the main impact will be over Belfast and Scotland.

"Friday will remain cloudy, with a chance of heavy rain in the afternoon, and temperatures will be in the high teens.

"On Saturday, there will be a bit of rain around, some of those showers may be heavy and thundery in the afternoon. But there is also a chance of some sunshine during the day."

She said the weather in the North East will start to settle on Sunday. It will become drier and temperatures will climb.

The mercury will rise from around 21C to 23C on Sunday to around 25c to 26C by Wednesday.

Ms Maxey added: "Warm air will start pushing further north and temperatures by mid week will reach the mid 20s.

"In some isolated spots, if conditions are perfect, it may reach heatwave thresholds and could even hit 30C.

"Tuesday onwards, there will be plenty of sunshine, still a bit of cloud and temperatures in the mid 20s."
