North East weather forecast: Ice yellow warning in place with travel disruption expected

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for parts of the North East.

Icy patches are expected from 9pm on Saturday night and 11am on Sunday morning and snow could even fall on higher ground.

The ice could affect the roads and cause travel disruption, the Met Office says.

The warning affects several regions in the UK but in the North East, it affects County Durham , Northumberland and Gateshead.

A spokesperson said: "A spell of rain and hill snow is likely to affect many areas, with skies clearing at times to allow icy surfaces, although these won't affect all places.

"The snow is most likely above 200 metres elevation and probably focused in the north Pennines and into parts of Scotland; here it could affect a few lower lying areas."

What to expect

  • Some roads and railways are likely to be affected with longer journey times
  • Icy surfaces may make accidents and falls more likely.
