North East to get mixed bag of weather with sun, cloud and rain forecast for weekend

With sunshine, cloud and the risk of thunderstorms, the North East has had a mixed week with the weather - but what does the weekend have in store for us?

Many will be hoping for some sun as we head into Saturday and Sunday.

But Met Office experts are predicting a bit of a mixed bag for the region again.

A yellow warning for thunderstorms was issued for the County Durham area between Wednesday and Friday morning, and that warning remained in place for central, southern and eastern parts of England on Friday.

However, the North East is expected to stay mostly dry with sunny spells, though with plenty of cloud around.

Temperatures from Friday to Sunday will hover between 12C and 16C, and there may be some rain overnight and during the day.

The weather this weekend will be mixed. Pictured are people enjoying the warm weather on Longsands beach in Tynemouth (Newcastle Chronicle)

Here is the Met Office weather forecast for the North East

Friday :

Rather cool at first. Dry for much of the day with bright spells during the morning. Cloud will increase later with rain arriving in the evening. Light winds inland, breezy on coasts. Maximum temperature 16C.

Friday night:

Intermittent rain will spread northwards, becoming heavy in a few places at times. Continuing breezy along coasts, with lighter winds inland. Minimum temperature 8C.

Saturday :

Any early rain will clear, then mainly dry through the day. Variable cloud cover will allow sunny intervals to develop and a few showers. Brisk winds on coasts, becoming light. Maximum temperature 18C.

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday:

Cloudy with occasionally heavy rain on Sunday, feeling rather cool. Monday and Tuesday will have more variable cloud, perhaps a few showers with some pleasant sunny spells.
